In a walking route survey in Brisbane, 27 participants chose a route that includes a river crossing, and 96 participants chose a route that passes through a forest. Of those who chose the river crossing route, 18 also chose the forest route.

If a participant is selected at random and is known to have chosen the forest route, what is the probability that they also chose the river crossing route? Express your answer as an exact fraction.

Worked solution

  1. Identify the given information: 96 participants chose the forest route, and 18 of those also chose the river crossing route.
  2. The question asks for the probability that a participant who chose the forest route also chose the river crossing route. This is a conditional probability: P(river crossing | forest).
  3. Use the definition of conditional probability: P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B). Here, A is choosing the river crossing, B is choosing the forest.
  4. P(A and B) is the proportion of participants who chose both routes. Since 18 out of 96 forest route participants also chose the river crossing, P(A and B) = 18 / 96.
  5. P(B) is the proportion who chose the forest route. Since 96 participants chose the forest route, and we are given that the participant is known to have chosen it, P(B) = 96 / 96 = 1 (in terms of conditional probability, we are restricting to the forest group).
  6. Substitute into the formula: P(river crossing | forest) = (18 / 96) / 1 = 18 / 96.
  7. Simplify the fraction 18 / 96 by dividing both numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, which is 6.
  8. 18 ÷ 6 = 3, 96 ÷ 6 = 16. So, 18 / 96 = 3 / 16.
  9. The simplified fraction 3/16 is the exact probability.
  10. Check: 3/16 = 0.1875. 18/96 = 0.1875. The values match.
  11. The probability that a participant who chose the forest route also chose the river crossing route is 3/16.
  12. The answer is expressed as an exact fraction, as required.

Reference answer: 3/16
